Typical Island Trip

Overnight island trips depart Pierpoint Landing. Upon arrival at the island the crew will put squid light in the water in order to catch more bait and attract game fish. Clients can fish or stay in their bunk, however, we definitely recommend that you fish all night but if not our crew will be fishing and wake up passengers when the fish start biting. Depending on what island you are fishing the departure time will be relative to travel time required to return to Pierpoint Landing the next evening. For instance San Clemente Island is a five-hour run, Santa Barbara Island is four hours and Catalina Island is two hours. The target species for island trips are white sea bass, yellowtail, halibut and calico bass.

Catalina is part of the eight Channel Islands archipelago. Santa Catalina Island is the only one of the eight islands with a significant permanent civilian settlement—the city of Avalon and the unincorporated town of Two Harbors.

The Island is 21 miles and encompasses approximately 47,884 acres or approximately 76 square miles. The highest elevations are Mt. Orizaba (2,069 feet) and Mount Black Jack (2,006 feet). The deepest water between Catalina and the mainland is approximately 3,000 feet or more than 1/2 mile. Water temperature ranges from 64 to 73 degrees in the summer and 54 to 59 degrees in winter.

Catalina Island is a place where the gentle rhythm of the waves makes time slow down. It’s a place where you can paddle through crystal clear waters in the crisp morning air, followed by Mai Tais and sun soaked massages on the beach in the afternoon. Ballycotton is a sheltered village on the Atlantic coast and a famous sea angling area. The Blackbird is known as a good music venue. McGraths is a great example of a traditional Irish “Local”. The village now plays host to an annual arts festival organised by the local community. Named the 8 Degrees West Arts Festival, after the line of longitude which runs between the island and the main land. The festival is held on the first weekend of June and is now entering its forth year. Now in its 32nd year, the Ballycotton Road Race attracts runners from around Ireland and abroad to its 10 Mile circuit of country backroads, each year the race is over subscribed many times over. The local area is home to many artists and craftspeople included woodworkers, painters, potters, writers and musicians who regularly exhibit at the Stephen Pearce Gallery in Shanagarry.
